Microsoft plans iPod rival

New York: Microsoft has been
developing its own hand-held digital media player, apparently to challenge
Apple Computer's iPod. The device could be in time for the holiday season, but
its exact release date and features briefly described on the company's website
last week have been removed. Microsoft's digital device would be the second one
of its kind. The first one, the iPod, lacks features of Internet browsing,
e-mail and the ability to download music without being connected to a PC.
Microsoft's device, which is all
about music, is designed for the user to download music from a service it
operates. The device would also include a more advanced video screen, according
to the website.
The company has also held talks
with music companies, with major record manufacturers like Samsung.
Samsung, Sony, Creative
Tech-nology, and other electronics makers were persuaded to license Microsoft
software for their devices, because a Microsoft device was not in competition
with theirs. In effect, those companies were doing the hard-ware making.
Tough times ahead
Panics and some major television
networks. Apple's iTunes Music Store is the world's largest online music
retailer.
Microsoft was once only licensing
its software to these firms. Now, it becomes a competitor.

This is what happened when
IBM/Apple/Compaq tried to
"bypass" their long established dealer network and started selling
Computers directly from their website (to save 15% dealer commission).
GM tried to sell cars on its
website bypassing dealer network. There was so much opposition from dealers in
both cases that the move had to be dropped/withdrawn.
Microsoft was only licensing its
Software to Samsung, Sony, Creative. They are NOT Microsoft's dealers. Even
then, Microsoft will now become a competitor!
This is why, after 6 months, we
will either shut down India Recruiter OR stop further "Registration".
We cannot be competing with our own partner websites!

Amsterdam: Do you think your
high-paid managers know better than a computer?
A computer-based hiring program
has been used by a firm for two years to select new lawyers. The program uses
the same kind of data-mining techniques employed by financial services and
marketing firms.
A new study by academics at three
US universities shows that hiring models derived from data can predict job
performance and longevity more accurately than human recruiters.
The study found that the computer
models, and by large, can do a better job. Companies spent $135 million last
year on hiring software and consulting.
As long as you have some
history and a large enough database, the computer will do a better job than an
experienced, snickering claim, a sixty-year-old manager.
