NOTES FROM WORLD WIDE MIND

Notes from “World Wide Mind” (Author: Michael Chorost)

Dated: 18/06/2012
Pg = 42

The implication for brain implants is this: to make someone “see” something, it may be sufficient to trigger a memory of having seen a similar object before.

As strange as this sounds, it happens all the time.
In dreams, none of the dreamer’s sensory input is actually coming from the senses. It is all assembled, willy-nilly, from memories.
Dreams are an extreme case, but even in waking life, a great deal of brain’s sensory experience is actually internally generated by raiding memories.
This doesn’t mean that the external world does not exist, or is irrelevant; when you see a door and open it, much of your experience is coming from sensory information. But quite a lot of detail is filled in, such as information about shapes, colors and textures……

That’s a tip-off that the brain’s stored expectations — that is, its memories — shape experience to a much greater extent than commonly realized.

 “My Comments on Pg: 42”

In my emails (June 08/09, 2012) to Shuklendu, I have laid down the “logic” to be followed in “Job Alerts Recommendation” algorithm, which will be based on “Jobs Applied History” of each candidate.

I have suggested to highlight/hyperlink (to Wikipedia?), “keywords” found in each recommended advt.
Obviously, these are the very same keywords which that candidate has “seen” in previous advts — and may be the keywords that made him “Apply” against those previous advts.

So, when he once again “sees” those same keywords in next job advt, his (pleasant?) memory will make him “Like” this next advt!

My attempt should be to “trigger” in the brain of the jobseeker, “pleasant/happy” memories, upon seeing a job-alert “recommended” by our algorithm.

When he “sees” the SAME keywords, will it make him feel “GOOD”?

Pg = 49

Note that in order for blackboxing to work, you have to know ahead of time, what you are looking for.

You have to be looking for a neural pattern or a P300, with the prior knowledge of what they mean in a given situation.

The algorithms are inherently closed-ended.
The machine knows that a given pattern means Add and another one means Subtract……

A pattern-matching methodology, by its very nature, can tell us nothing at all about the subject’s conscious experience……

……algorithms can model the information-flow within a brain, and from that make predictions about what the brain is attempting to do.

They have become pretty good at detecting and executing simple intentions.

My Comments on Pg: 47 / 49

For my purpose,

▶ Analyzed Portion of data
≡ keywords found in “Jobs Applied History”

▶ Unanalyzed Portion of data
≡ keywords found in jobs NOT APPLIED yet.

I am looking for a “pattern” of keywords, in (say), 100 advts a candidate has “Applied for” earlier.
The higher the “frequency”, the higher the “weightage” for a given keyword.

So, it tells me, what advts (containing keywords with high weightages) will “appeal” to him.
“Weightages” are my “prior knowledge”.

If he has liked these “keywords” in the past, then he is likely to “like” them in future as well.

This is how we will try to “decipher his intention”.

JOB ALERT RECOMMENDATION SYSTEM

Job Alert Recommendation System

I have written to you about this in my emails of 08/09 June.

I enclose some of my older notes on the same subject.

Not everything that I wrote in those notes may be valid today, but the fundamentals of
▶ Predictive / Personalized Job-Alerts
based on
▶ Development of a “Match Index” for each newly arriving job-advt
based on
▶ Keywords – and their weightages – contained in past Jobs Applied,
remains.

RESUME BLASTER WIDGET

Covering Letter

Mr. Suneet Singh Tuli
CEO
Datawind

Dear Suneet,

▶ Enclosed find screen-shots of “Resume Blaster” Widget.

▶ This widget is ready for integration with an Ad Network of your choice.

▶ This is to request you to pre-install “Resume Blaster” on all Aakash 2 / Ubislate 7 tablets, along with “My Jobs” widget.

▶ My proposal, justifying this request is enclosed.

With regards,
Hemen Parekh

Why?

▶ Foremost, every registered jobseeker may NOT have matched job alerts.
So, “My Jobs” widget is of no use to him.

▶ This will be especially true of FRESH GRADUATES, in whose resumes, there is very little to “match”!

▶ They have:
• NO Industry
• NO Experience
• NO Functional background

Hence only “match” is on “CITY”.

▶ Every year, some 3.5 million fresh graduates are coming out of colleges in India.

▶ They want a job in
• any Industry
• any Function
• any City
• any job at all
• at any salary.

Why?

  • "Resume Blaster" will enable them to apply (forward their resumes) to some 58,000+ employers/recruiters, without bothering whether they have vacancies or not.

  • There will be 2 versions of "Resume Blaster" viz:

    • Industry wise

    • City wise

  • Jobseekers (fresh graduates) from rural areas/small towns, wishing to find a job in their own town or a nearby city, Resume Blaster will enable to let them apply to companies located in such nearby towns.

  • Widget frees them from the tyranny of PC/Broadband, since it will be pre-installed on tablets.

For Whom?

  • As explained earlier, Resume Blaster is primarily intended for FRESH GRADUATES

  • But it will prove even more useful to students who have only passed 10th standard / 12th standard, who are looking for jobs nearby.

  • Millions of such 10th standard / 12th standard students who are about to receive FREE or subsidized Aakash Tablets will immediately start using this widget.

  • Even experienced professionals, who get very few job-alerts thru “My Jobs” widget, will also use Resume Blaster

  • Even those who get lots of job-alerts (thru “My Jobs” widget) will find Resume Blaster very convenient for choice of:

    • Companies

    • Cities

REVENUE MODEL

  • All major job portals offer Resume Blast feature,
    But,

    • Feature is offered ONLINE (No widget)
    • Resumes can be forwarded to only 1000/2000 companies (NO selection)
    • Jobseeker must pay between Rs. 1000/2000 for this service – and in advance, and online thru credit card (?)
    • Job portals never reveal the names of those 1000/2000 companies to jobseekers

As against this, our “Resume Blaster” widget will enable a jobseeker to:

• Select Industries / Cities / Companies
• Blast any number, any time, over a period
• Do this OFF-LINE
• Do it FREE

REVENUE MODEL

We (Datawind & RecruitGuru) will earn revenue thru pre-integrating widget with some Advt. Network.

The widget screen where Company Names get displayed, will show only 10 Companies at a time.

Once a widget user has selected & applied against one or more of these Companies, he will be enabled to fetch the next page containing 20 more company-names, only by touching / opening / viewing a product-advt delivered by the Advt. Network.

This mechanism will ensure that, in every login session, a widget user will touch/view dozens of product-adverts.

RESUME SEARCH CITY WISE

Shuklendu       06 Feb, 2011
Resume Search / City‑wise

Background
We discussed this briefly during my visit to your office last Friday.

This morning, Google gave us following ranks:
Search Term | Google Rank
Jobs Archive | 7 / 2.1 Billion
Resume Archive | 20 / 225 Million
Job Search & Resume Search | Not in first 10 pages!!

Apparently, Google does not “link/relate” our website with search terms “Job Search” or “Resume Search”!

So, we need to create additional pages with titles:
▷ Job Search
▷ Resume Search

And, construct these pages in such a manner that Google spider is able to crawl and index,
▷ all of our jobs
▷ all of our resumes

Enclosed: find UI of pages,
▷ Resume Search – City‑wise
▷ Job Search – City‑wise

Many job‑portals do have such “CITY‑WISE” search pages or listings.

You may ask Nitin/Rahul to take these up, after current priorities (sent last week) are over.

In the meantime, we have purchased COMPANY DATABASE (approx. 20 L → 25 L companies) from one Jayesh.

This database contains:
▷ Company Name
▷ Street Address
▷ City Name
▷ Email ID

▷ Industry‑Names {which will need to be “mapped” with our Ind. Names}

In this COMPANY DATABASE there are hundreds of “City-wise” files. But arrangement of columns differ from file-to-file.

So starting today, Tushar has started copy/pasting all the files into new excel sheets with STANDARDIZED columns, with same sequence.

Hopefully, this job should get over in 2/3 days.

Then, we will be able to use this database for:

  • Current “Blast Your Resume” page

  • “Resume Blaster” widget

  • Job Search / Citywise page
(which is replacing my earlier note/UI of “Jobs in My Street ?”)

With regards

FRIEND MAKER

Geetha Manjunath (HP Labs)

Revathi (SiteOnMobile)
Shuklendu (Sentient)

Concept Note for Widget
“Friend Maker”

All of us keep receiving “requests” from perfect strangers (most of the time), to “accept” them as “friends” or wanting to be “linked.”

Such requests come mostly from members of Facebook or LinkedIn.

Senders of such requests need to go online, using PC/broadband, to send out the requests.

Recipients also need to be online, to receive — and accept — requests through email.

But in India, only 100 million people access internet — and that too, once a week.

If you use criteria of “every alternate day,” then that number drops to 50 million!

As against this, 900 million people have mobile phones — of which, close to 50 million have smart phones.

In 2 years time, 100 million will have smart phones — or tablets.

And, unlike a PC/broadband, these smart phones are always ON and always AVAILABLE!

So, how about developing a widget which will:

  • ✅ Enable “sending out” requests

  • ✅ Enable “accepting” requests
    — directly from a smartphone/tablet?

Should be possible.

Question:
In current scenario, both “senders” & the “recipients” are registered MEMBERS of Facebook / LinkedIn.

“Who” will Widget-users, send such requests to?
Answer

They will themselves need to be registered jobseekers of

and,
they can only send such requests to other registered jobseekers of CustomizeResume.

So, CustomizeResume website becomes the platform for
“Friend Maker” widget.

Obviously, both the “Requests” as well as the “Acceptances” will pass through our website, which will (like Facebook / LinkedIn) create necessary pages.

Now the (interesting) twist, which, I hope, will make our widget much more popular than Facebook / LinkedIn:

For the 47 lakh candidates on our site, we already know,

  • ✅ Gender (Male / Female)

  • ✅ City (Location)

  • ✅ Age (Birth Date)

So, the moment a widget-user logs in (using his email ID / password), we know about him, these 3 things.

So, the widget will show/display names / brief details of 5 members, who:

  • ✅ Belong to the SAME city

  • ✅ Belong to opposite sex

  • ✅ Are about the SAME age

Widget UI Mockup (as drawn):

Recruiter
Here are 5 members, to whom you may wish to send “Be My Friend” request. They belong to your city.

☑️ Archana Mehta (F) / 21 Jan 88
☑️ Minal Deshpande (F) / 10 Mar 83
⬜ [3 more entries below, empty]

As usual, if the widget user wants to see 5 more names, he will need to click/touch a product advt (No free lunch!)

Obviously, a widget-user, can send a “Be My Friend” request to another member ONLY ONCE.

We do NOT want any particular member to be "stalked / harassed" through repeated requests, from the same person.

So, if the option (to ☑ and SEND) is not exercised for any displayed name, it is gone forever!

This means, keeping track (a log?) of “Names Displayed So Far”, for each & every widget user, to ensure there is no repetition, while delivering 5 fresh/new names.

And of course, every time a widget-user logs in, 5 New names will be displayed.

Now,
Selecting “Names” belonging to:

  • Same City

  • Opposite Sex

is not difficult
But,
What about “approx Same Age”?

Let us use following logic:

  • Take widget user’s birth date (i.e., age = 25)

  • Go back 5 years (i.e., age = 20)

  • Start delivering “Names” of members, who are 20 years old

  • Continue upward (till “ascending age” list gets exhausted).

When widget-user clicks on (touches) SEND REQUEST button,
the following email (or SMS?) to be delivered:

Dear Member:

Ashwin Panchal invites you to be a friend.
You can see his/her full profile by logging in www.CustomizeResume.com, and entering PEN ______ on “Be My Friend” page,
where you can ACCEPT or REJECT.

We assure you that you will NOT receive a repeat request from this person, anytime in future.

We take no responsibility for genuineness / accuracy of sender’s profile or for his future relationship with you.
— RecruitGuru

Now, “accepting” (or rather, being able to “accept”) an invitation through email, is only a halfway house!

It puts us in the same “class” as Facebook / LinkedIn!!

NO GOOD!

Alternative?

If the “Recipient” is also a widget-user, then the “Invitation” should be delivered onto the screen of his/her widget, with provisions to:

  • View sender’s brief profile

  • ACCEPT / REJECT buttons

These preliminary thoughts can be debated & improved upon, if the concept itself looks promising.
