FREE PHONE CALLS ON SKYPE

Newspaper Clipping:

Kazaa Creators Now Connect To Free Phone Calls Over The Net

EFE — 22/09/03

The creators of Kazaa, the popular file-sharing service, have launched a new program that lets users make free phone calls over the Internet.

The software, called Skype, allows people to talk to anyone else who has installed the program, free of charge, anywhere in the world.

Skype users can download the software from the company’s website and use a microphone and speakers connected to their computers to talk to each other.

The system uses peer-to-peer technology, the same principle used by Kazaa, to route calls efficiently without needing centralized servers.

Although free calls are limited to computer-to-computer connections, the company plans to offer paid services to call regular phones in the future.

Skype’s founders, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, said the service offers superior voice quality compared to traditional Internet telephony, thanks to its proprietary technology.

The launch of Skype could shake up the telecommunications industry, especially as broadband Internet becomes more widespread.

Some experts predict that as the quality and reliability of Internet telephony improve, more consumers may switch away from traditional phone lines.

Free Phone Calls over Internet

  • Pl read enclosed news item on Skype.
  • It may have important implications for Recruiting Agencies!

Sanjeev/Deepak will receive and make a lot of phone calls for marketing & technical support.
This could be a major time + cost saver.

We must examine how Skype can be used in our own strategy arising from the beginnings of our Resume Database Access (and upcoming Jobseeker.com site).

Key Points

  1. Skype is FREE.
  2. All you need is a broadband connection (certain min. speed).
  3. All registration with Skype (company) is free.
  4. All Recruiters/Consultants can now interact live with candidates anywhere in India or abroad.
    No extra cost beyond broadband.
  5. Download software from Skype.
  6. No license fee.
  7. Anyone using this FREE voice link (will soon be video too!) will save thousands per month in phone costs.
  8. Some smart recruiters will go beyond this limit —
  9. While using Skype, they will not require landline/STD/ISD calls
  10. — Regular telephone business will drop!!

Other Implications:

  • Can RecruitGum, offering Resume Search @ ₹25/₹50 for search (of resumes on subscription basis, PRIVATE database) — force Monster/Naukri/JobsAhead to drop their resume database access prices from current annual ₹2 lakhs / ₹4 lakhs?
  • If we launch Jobseeker.com (to sell resumes) — it will directly compete with Monster/Naukri etc.
We will be able to offer APPLE-FOR-APPLE comparison since Jobseeker.com will also host PUBLIC resume database.
  • Will existing customers of Naukri/Monster switch to RecruitGum?
  • I don’t think so. They’ll justify “paying more” because they’ll say:
  • “We are getting resumes and hence paying for this value.”
  • RecruitGum must emphasize its different value — i.e., a ‘Complementary’ service, not a
  • Competing’ service.
