Newspaper Clipping: Microsoft to Digitise 1,00,000 Books

(Article snippet about Microsoft signing a deal to scan and put online 1,00,000 books from the British Library, competing with Google's efforts to digitise books.)

Content is King.

If not, why would Microsoft spend $2.5 million to scan (and OCR, of course!) 1 lakh books?

out of 130 lakh books in British library.

Microsoft knows that

  • After 10 years, there will be no landline phones (at least in USA). Only Mobiles.
  • Bandwidth (especially thru the Air) will be so abundant that telecommunications delivery will be almost FREE (Both George Gilder & Nicholas Negroponte says so!)
  • Hence, the only way Telecom Service Providers & Internet Service Providers & TV Service Providers etc. can make money is from delivering COMPELLING CONTENT. In future, Consumers/Customers will be willing to only pay for "CONTENT-VALUE", not delivery-value.
  • This is why building up a database of 10 million job-advts and archiving it - and rendering it SEARCHABLE - and being able to DATAMINE & detect PATTERNS/TRENDS/FREQUENCIES/PROBABILITIES, is very IMPORTANT.

As cellphones gradually acquire more and more capabilities of a computer, it is possible that in 3/4 years,

  • HR mgrs. would "Post Job Advt" from their cellphones.
  • Candidates would "Post Resume" from their cellphones.

We have to be ready with required Software.

¾ days back, I sent you a note, suggesting that a HR Mgr, instead of "posting job-advt" from a computer, could simply enter "Search Parameters (Reverse of JAM)" from his mobile and then - within 90 seconds - get RAM on his screen! HR mgrs. would love to "get liberated" from PC. This FREEDOM will encourage them to conduct far more "Resume-Searches".

Universal Acceptance

  • Some years back, Microsoft came out with "Passport" which would be accepted by many websites - contained personal data of the passport-holder, which would get uploaded on any website needing such data for "registration".
  • At millions of shops & restaurants, we see a board, "We accept MASTER-CARD/VISA CARD etc."
  • Many Indian Banks are forming a "consortium", whereby ONE/SAME ATM card can be used to withdraw cash from the ATM machine of "ANY" partner bank.
  • Someday, we should strive for a scenario, when, on the homepages, many/many websites, will say,

"We accept User ID/Password, issued by Global Recruiter"

How many job-advts are needed to send 1 job-alert?

For Aug. 2005, see enclosed tabulation and corresponding graph. We could not download any jobs on $5^{th}$ & again today. Readings for $17^{th}$ & $18^{th}$ are FREAK - obviously something terribly went wrong! (also no record for $1^{st}$ Aug!).

One can easily calculate $\sigma$ (standard deviation) for the remaining 20 readings and then plot a normal curve, with

If the process is statistically stable, then each day's RATIO, should fall, somewhere between UCL & LCL.

I am sure STANDARD statistical s/w packages (to calculate Mean/Std. deviation of a given set of "Numbers") are available FREE from Net. Such a package can generate the CONTROL CHART automatically and display in our ADMIN TOOL.

As more & more "readings/records" (of ratio) accumulates, the software will also automatically revise the Mean (upward or downward) – and also continuously/dynamically re-calculate the standard deviations. These are all, very established techniques. Someday (when we are a little free from other priorities), we should implement this.

But this ratio does not depend upon "No. of jobs downloaded" only. It equally depends upon "No. of Active Registrations".

So, instead of just 306 registrations, if this no. goes upto 3060, then even with daily download of 2000 job-adverts, we may be able to generate/send out 2000 job-alerts, giving us a ratio of $\frac{2000}{2000}=1.0$

To bring in the effect (impact of "No. of subscribers, maybe, we ought to calculate/plot:
