SUBORDINATE STAFF (1)
- By far the largest no. of jobseekers in this
country belong to this category. (Most, or perhaps all, of the 42 million
jobseekers registered with 914 employment exchanges, would be happy to get
a "subordinate" job. Nearly all of these are graduates in ARTS /
SCIENCE / COMMERCE).
- These also include CRAFTSMEN / ARTISANS,
studying-in or passed-out from thousands of
- ITI's (Industrial Training Institutes)
- Coaching classes of all types
- Private Training Institutions
- Students graduating from thousands of ARTS /
SCIENCE / COMMERCE colleges of India belong to this category.
- Except for those coming out of ITI's rest have no
"skills" (manual). They are poor even in mental skills (e.g:
Calculation).
- Most develop some skills after 2/3 years of
practical experience.
- Most of these (when employed) belong to UNIONISED /
NON-SUPERVISORY cadre.
Subordinate Staff (2)
- Most of the subordinate staff continue to work in
the same "category/grade/cadre" for most of their working life,
even though their "Skills" (pertaining to their
"trade") do improve over a period of time. With improved skills,
longer experience and a bit of "Versatility," their salaries do
tend to rise, however, they continue to be identified with their
"trade-category."
- e.g. Corporates advertise for all kinds of
"Receptionists" and pay salaries ranging from Rs. 3000 p.m. to
Rs. 20,000 p.m., but still the Adverts. Says "REQUIRED
RECEPTIONIST"
- The advt. may specify
- Edu. Quali } almost always
- Experience
- Salary offered } occasionally
- Skills required
- Sex / Gender
And the beauty is that
- Irrespective of Edu. Quali & Exp. actually
possessed, all kinds of candidates will apply (whether they qualify or not
!) Also hundreds will apply.
Subordinate Staff (3)
- Another note-worthy feature of this category
(subordinate staff) is that most of these jobs get advertised in CLASSIFIED
COLUMNS (rarely in APPOINTMENT pages).
- And invariably, the "heading / title" of
such job-advts is the TRADE CATEGORY.
- Obvious reason is:
- An existing "stenographer" searching a
better job-opportunity, would almost invariably look-up classified
job-advts. with heading STENOGRAPHER required.
- occasionally, an ambitious person may also look-up
SECRETARY or STENO-SECRETARY or EXECUTIVE ASST. required advts.
- For such categories, most companies will advertise ONLY
in local newspapers (i.e. never in magazines!) Quite often, afternoon
newspapers which such people can read on their way home in evening (riding
a bus/train).
(4)
- In a similar way, a TYPIST working in Mumbai, is
quite unlikely to look-up classified columns of a CHENNAI newspaper! She
is looking for another TYPIST job in Mumbai itself.
- So, there is very little
"across-the-country/city" mobility in these categories.
- So "city" where currently working is very
important (in resume form)
- Similarly "Posting City" will be very
important in "Job Advt" posting form.
