JAWS
Enclosed find a write-up on JAWS,
to evaluate feasibility of this idea. Underlying idea is to become an "Aggregator
of Job Advts/ Broadcaster of Job Advts/ Beneficiary of Job Advts".
There is no one doing this today
in India—or perhaps the whole world! It could be a "Killer Application"
(or a "damp squib!"). On internet, it is impossible to predict
the outcome of an "experiment"!!
Questions
- What would be the Cost/Time-frame?
- Will Server take the load?
Let us discuss as soon as
possible.

Supplement to note on "JAWS"
I enclose a news cutting from
latest issue of "Express Computer (9-4-01)". I tried to search
this "research" on https://www.google.com/search?q=Careermosaincindia.com
but simply could not find any! I wanted more details/see graphs/get the list of
29 "dailies & magazines". No dice!
Anyway, I feel if we become a
major "AGGREGATOR" of job-advts from all over India, we could
generate such analysis—trends—graphs—charts—tabulations—statistics etc. AUTOMATICALLY!
Especially Employer
Organisations/Labour Unions/Professional Bodies/HR Consultants/Govt. Depts
etc. would desperately want to lay their hands on such "statistical
Analysis"—especially if it is available ON DEMAND/ANYTIME/FOR ANY
PERIOD/FOR ANY INDUSTRY—FUNCTION—CITY—DESIG. LEVEL etc. etc.
Killer App. becomes a Deadly
App!
JAWS (JOBS ACROSS WORLD
SURVEY)
Q. What is JAWS?
Ans: JAWS is a compilation of
job-advts appearing in
- newspapers
- magazines
- job-related websites
- Corporate websites
These will be entered offline
and first uploaded on our website thru Admin. Tool (Version 3.0 provides).
Thru Admin Tool, these
job-advts will get tabulated
- Chronologically
- Category wise
- IT
- Non-IT
- Subordinate
- Entry-Level
These tabulations will be made
available to a wide variety of organisations thru email broadcasting
directly from our webserver.
This Service will be "free"
to the Organisations and will be made available to those Organisations which
request for the same.
Initially we may "push"
these job-advt Summaries, even to those who have not specifically requested for
the Same (e.g.: Colleges/Edu. Institutions/Cybercafes etc. etc.)
They can, of course, ask us to
"discontinue" the Service.
Thru www.jobtrack.com
tie-up, Monster.com offers this Job-advt broadcasting feature to 1200
USA Colleges—by charging $ 25 per college!! We have, so far signed-up 119
colleges—to whom we plan to send the "summary" free—except
we do NOT reveal advertiser's identity. (P.S. DO VISIT job-track.com)
Q. How will Organisations benefit
from this Service?
Ans: Each set of Organisations,
may have some "Unique" use/benefit for such a service! Some of
these benefits are explained in Annex: A
Q. What will the JAWS
tabulation look like?
Ans: Like follows
|
Advt No |
Date |
Position/Vacancy |
Ind |
Function/Trade/Vocation |
Desig. (Actual Level) |
Posting City |
Salary p.m./p.yr. |
Q. If the name of Advertising
Company is not revealed in the tabulation, why should Organisations
request for such a tabulation?
A. Obviously, only those
organisations, which desperately need some "info/content" to
deliver to their members/visitors/viewers/students etc. will request for
this Service.
We have to convince them
that their members/students/surfers etc. will still benefit "enormously"
from such a tabulation, even if advertisers' names are hidden.
In any case, this is a "free"
Service!
To be more "honest"
with them, we may, politely tell them "There is no free lunch in the
world!"
Behind providing such a free
tabulation of jobs from around the World (which will certainly cost us a small
fortune!), our motive is very clear & transparent, viz:
"We want all of their members/students/visitors/surfers
etc. to log-into our website, after seeing the tabulation and then
- Submit resumes
- Apply online
- Receive job-alerts
- Receive interview-call letters
There is no hiding of our motive/intention!
And then,
They should be least bothered by
what is our motive! They should concern themselves with "how will my
readers/members..."
Q. How will Organisations come to
know about this free Service?
Ans: We will have to send-out
mailers (email + snail mail) explaining the entire scheme/how
it works and "what is in it" for the Organisation concerned.
We will also put-up the whole
scheme/service on our website.
We will start with our existing
partners
- Colleges
- Cybercafes
- Websites
- NACT members
etc. etc.
Q. How will Organisations "apply"
for this service?
Ans: They can apply online
or Send us an email (offline) giving following info:
- Name of Organisation
- Address
- Phone/fax/email
- Contact Person's Name
- Nature of Organisation (Business Activity)
- Whether already a partner of 3P under various
ALLIANCE PROGRAMS
Q. How will an Organisation choose/select
what job-advt Summary it would like to receive?
Ans: Ideally (in long term?), we
should give an organisation to choose only those job-advts which cover
- a particular "Industry"
- a particular "Function" (or "Trade/Vocation")
- a particular "Designation-level"
- a particular "City of Posting"
(Thru online ADMIN-TOOL) etc.
etc.
Initially to simplify
matters & get started quickly, we may restrict the choice to only
ONE of the following options
- IT-related Job Advt $\circ$
- Non-IT " $\circ$
- Subordinate staff Job-Advt $\circ$
- Entry Level " $\circ$
He should be able to select
"online" & to download active database!
Once "chosen/selected",
he cannot change for next 24 hours.
He can always select a different
category after 24 hours.
Ideally we should also give him a
choice to select
- Last 25 job advts (chronologically)
- " 50 " "
- " 100 " "
If there are no
"additions", same advts. will repeat
Or, the option could be
- Advts. received during last 1 day
- " " " 3 "
- " " " 7 "
A Very Important Consideration
- Especially newspapers should be allowed to edit
& "delete" any/some advts. from the summary
tabulation before printing.
- They may not have enough space to print all jobs.
- All tabulations (after every $5^{th}/10^{th}$
job-listing) will carry following message

Top 5 industries provide 60%
employment: Survey
IT News Network
Mumbai
https://www.google.com/search?q=Careermosaincindia.com
recently compiled a research in India on the latest employment trends in the
job market, based on industry, location, function and level. This information
has been culled over a period of 6 months (August 2000 - January 2001) covering
29 dailies and magazines from the Indian print media.
The research proved that top five
industries have created maximum employment opportunities in the last six
months. Out of the 60% employment created, the top five employ 60 percent of
the total. They are:
- IT/Communication - 30%
- Software development - 13.8%
- Engineering - 7%
- Academics - 5%
- ERP/Business solution - 3.5%
[Graph: Employment over 6 months]
Furthermore, the employment
opportunities created in these industries have been analyzed according to the
level of management, namely junior, middle, senior and top. Junior level
management includes employees with up to 3 years of w1ork
experience; the middle level requires an experience of three to ten years (e.g.
project manager). Senior level management calls for about 10-15 years of work
experience and includes general managers to vice-presid2ents. The
top level refers to CEO's and directors with work experience of 15 years and
above.

Middle level |

Senior level |

The huge demand for junior level
employees is extremely encouraging. The two main reasons being:
- A flat hierarchy
- The project worth is calculated on the man-hours
put in, therefore the greater the man-power, the higher the project worth.
This is especially true in the IT industry.
FUNCTIONWISE
Each of these industries has
functional areas, some of which have high employment opportunities and others
that only allow vertical mobility. A few of the industries and functions
over-lap, such as software development, which is both an industry as well as a
function.
Over the last six months IT and
IT/communications have dominated the job trends in the functional area. The
areas with maximum employment opportunities are as follows:
- Software development, which leads the way with 30
percent, followed by engineering with 25 percent. Marketing close third at
9 percent, sales that accounted for 6.04 percent and academics 5 percent.
The months of December and January witnessed a slump in the software
sector.
LEVEL WISE - ACROSS ALL
INDUSTRIES
Level wise, the highest number of
jobs was observed in the junior level (43%), followed by middle level (35%),
senior level (19%) and the top level registered a sharp rise and would continue
to climb for the next few years. For freshers, its good news. Employment
opportunities at the entry level are promising.3
TOP EIGHT JOB LOCATIONS
The cities that offer the highest
employment opportunities in the country are:
The research proved that:
- Total no of jobs in the last six months showed
cyclical fluctuation.
- Jobs in top industries both function wise and level
wise, also showed cyclical fluctuation.
- More number of jobs has been created in junior
level, than for any other level.
- IT continues to be the major area.

where almost 40 percent of all
the jobs are advertised.
- Jobs in IT would grow in spite of present slow down
(cumulatively) after the first quarter of 2001.
- Location wise Bombay, Hyderabad and Bangalore would
be the attractive places for job opportunities.
EXPRESS COMPUTER : 9-4-01
AGGREGATION
$26-01-01$
Enclosed note is 2 years old
but still valid.
When it was written 2 years ago,
the objective was to
- Compile in advance (offline), "search-results"
for hundreds or thousands of "combinations" of "search-parameters"
for a resume-search.
This was expected to result in a FASTER
DISPLAY of "search-results" - even if such an advance
compilation failed to take into account (i.e. take cognizance of) those resumes
which got submitted during last 24 hours (since we are not talking of
hosting our site on a SUPER COMPUTER!).
If our resume database was to
grow to a MILLION RESUMES, someday, this objective (of fast display
of search-results) would become VERY VALID, since a large resume
database would tend to SLOW DOWN the "search-process".
Another alternative is to apply
"sequential filtering" whereby the whole database is
continuously being filtered
- Industry wise
- Function wise
- Skills-wise (especially for IT resumes)
Such continuously filtering
(automatic) would create "SUB-SETS" of main database into
several smaller "databases", so that, when
corresponding/relevant "filter" is applied, the search is
conducted ONLY on that SUB-SET.
These SUB-SETS can be
pre-organised,
- Industry wise
- Function wise
- Skills wise.
In the Current Context, a
compilation/aggregation of
- Resume Search Queries (DEMAND SIDE)
would tell us - and the
jobseekers - WHAT kind of executives are currently in demand (- a
kind of TREND-ANALYSIS of jobs available)
But if we wish to show to
jobseekers a JOB-TREND, we need to aggregate RESUME-SEARCH QUERIES
MONTH-WISE.
|
Industry wise Name |
% of resume-search Queries. |
|
Jan |
|
We could repeat such a
"display-table for
- Functions
- Skills (for IT guys)."
Such a trend-analysis
would also help "students" in their CAREER PLANNING.
To experienced professionals,
it would help in re-orientation of their existing CAREERS by
acquiring latest/most-in-demand skills.
Such a "demand-trend"
would also help us in focussing our efforts on getting resumes of
particular niche/group of jobseekers, who are in high demand.
- Job Search Queries (SUPPLY SIDE)
A Similar analysis (as
foregoing) of all the job-search queries shot by job-seekers.
This reveals the situation from
the SUPPLY SIDE.
Obviously, candidates are
searching for jobs in those Industries/Functions/Skills
where they consider themselves EXPERTS/SUITABLE
based on their past/current experience.
So such an analysis (of
job-queries) reveal the AVAILABILITY OF CANDIDATES.
This (knowledge) would help us to
promote such candidates PRO-ACTIVELY amongst industries/companies most
likely to require such candidates.
It would (indirectly) help RECRUITERS
to know what kind of jobs candidates are searching and therefore, the availability
of such candidates.
Both types of Queries can
also be aggregated (& displayed month-wise) for
- CITY OF POSTING (to guide candidates where
are most jobs coming-up)
- CITY OF PREFERENCE (to guide recruiters,
where to put-up their next office/factory!)
Such a data-mining
"BY-PRODUCT" has great utility.
Cyril
Headhunt/Job Search
Searching results - at "aggregate"
level
If we "store"
all headhunt & jobsearch queries, then after a couple of years (may
be even one year) when we have accumulated a "database" of
several thousand queries, we could conduct a STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
as follows:
|
FILTER |
% of times that this filter
was FIRST CHOICE |
% of Time it was SECOND
CHOICE |
|
Industry |
||
|
Function |
||
|
Designation |
||
|
Edu-Quali |
||
|
Age |
||
|
Exp |
Over a period of time
(sufficiently long time), we are obtaining better & better "probability"
for each of the above-mentioned events! Thereafter (or simultaneously), within
a given filter (say Industry), we can build-up further probabilities of:
Probability for occurrence of -
"Auto Industry" is $\square$
- FMCG $\dots \dots$
- Chemical " $\dots \dots$
- M/C Tool " $\dots \dots$ etc. etc.
Process (of building-up
individual probabilities of occurrence) is CONTINUOUS/ON GOING/EVER REFINING...
Having established the
probability of the occurrence of a GIVEN "COMBINATION" OF FILTERS
& SUB-FILTERS,
We can arbitrarily "trigger"
searches against each "combination" and keep the
search-results "READY/WAITING" for someone to shoot that specific
query.
Then we can flash the results instantly,
processing having been done "offline".
To the surfers, this would
appear miraculously FAST!
