“FLIGHT-DECK”
I have taken this word from
“Customer Revolution” (Patricia Seybold) p = 225.
To navigate his plane thru rough
weather $\&$ land it safely to at the destination, a pilot needs a “flight
deck”. It is full of instruments (and controls too!) to show him hundreds
of parameters of the flight. It shows “Safe Operating Range” for each.
If some actual measurement (of any given parameter) is beyond SAFE limits, then
the pilot knows what “controls” to actuate and for how long. In many
modern, “fly-by-wire” planes, computers actuate these controls on their own. Auto-Pilot
functions.
Patricia strongly recommends that
each Company have its own, custom-designed FLIGHT-DECK.
On this Flight Deck, the
Company should be able to MONITOR its own “business-environment”.
Not only what is happening “internally”
but what is happening “externally” as well.
As of now, we have no mechanism
to gather/compile/graphically plot “external” data such as:
- Market Intelligence
- which Companies are on look-out for what kind
of executives and when/where
- who is paying what salaries to whom
But,
on our own Flight-Deck, we
must be able to monitor everything that is happening “internally”,
within 3P—and on a realtime basis.
And, then our Flight-Deck,
must provide us TOOLS/CONTROLS to
- chart out our COURSE (TARGETS)
- monitor (where we are w.r.t. targets)
- make “course-correction”
With this in mind, I suggest we
create a Single/Unified User-interface as per enclosed format, thru
which, all of us can “access”/“actuate”, whatever we want to see/do.
Obviously my proposal is not Comprehensive
and I request each one of you to apply your mind $\&$ come up with
suggestions $\&$ pass-on the same to Abhi before this week-end
(14$^{\text{th}}$).
After incorporating your
suggestions, Abhi will come up with his proposal $\&$ circulate to
all of us by (21$^{\text{st}}$), which we may then jointly debate
$\&$ finalise.

Automatic Generation of GRAPHS
Yesterday, you mentioned that
your Software is ready. Now we must put it to “Test”.
Enclosed find a list of graphs
that I would expect your Software to generate automatically — without
requiring a human being to “manually” enter/feed the “data” (of X/Y
axis values or even “trigger” such an event. A person may, even
forget to click on a button, at the end of the day! But if that means, that
particular graph would NOT get generated, then, that is NOT
acceptable!
So, your software must “link”
with the sources (from where to pick-up relevant data $\&$ insert) AND,
the Software must self-actuate (trigger) at pre-set time, daily,
weekly or monthly. No human intervention!!
For any clarification, pl. feel
free to discuss with Abhi/me. Give me targets for each graph.

Pyramid of Productivity
Enclosed find a “Conceptual”
framework. It is by no means “comprehensive”. I am sure you can
improve this.
What made me draw-up this
pyramid? What “triggered” it?
I thought of this when you told
me that before Consultants can re-start using debugged OES, they would need to
enter, all over again, COMPANY MASTER/LEGAL MASTER. This is a colossal waste of
time/energy — but, perhaps, cannot be avoided, at this stage.
Q:
What can we / must we do NOW, to
ensure that history does NOT repeat, in case of all of our applications? — no
matter how many “revisions/debugging” these applications may have to undergo?
Possible Answers?
MASTERS/DATABASES/SOFTWARE TOOLS
must not be an integral part of ANY application. These must be stand
alone/isolated.
Any user/user-group should
be able to use any application any time and any way (LAN/WAN/Dedicated
Line/VPN/Wireless devices etc.), without having to meddle with
- Masters
- Databases
- Software Tools
all of which must independently
work in the background.
No user should be able to add/edit/modify/delete,
any Masters/Databases/Tools.
Our Data/Network SECURITY
SYSTEM, should only define, WHO (user/user group) can access
$\&$ use, what/which application $\&$ how (local/remote
etc.). And it must keep a log of every use by every user (transactions/mouse-clicks/key-strokes).
“MASTERS” will flow to Databases/Software
Tools $\&$ Applications but independently “reside” somewhere
else—beyond every user’s “REACH”! Only DBA can touch them.
Perhaps, we can allow 3P’s own
employees to be able to “see/view” these MASTERS and suggest additions/deletions/modifications
to DBA, only who has “access” to the masters.
When a “Developer” designs
a new application/software tool/database, he should not have to worry/think
about the MASTERS.
And, obviously, a MASTER remains
a MASTER, irrespective of the application!
You cannot have “separate”
Company-Masters, for
- Member Database
- Non Member "
- Module 1
- OES
- Compiler
- Manhattan
- JAWS
- Web service
etc.
