Printed Text (Newspaper Article - Technology & You):

Charting new pictures

A new software 'visualises' data in ways that give a much richer image than typical tools

If you want to know how the bean kept led today, you could try to make sense of the rows and tables, or look at the charts and tables, or any number of Web sites. Or you could look at the data of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region where there will see blocks of coloured rectangular greens and purples. The coloured blocks a data set, the size indicates the cost of a key market capitalisation and the colour indicates price change. Clicking on a rectangular block offers more detailed information about the company and its influence.

The ease with which a users look at a glance is an example for technique known as information visualisation, that is making its way into the mainstream affective in the business and finance world of late. The idea is to replace the rows and columns of numbers of the graphs and charts that have long been used to present data with a much richer image. Visual uses doesn't mean substituting for numbers and graphs, but an adjunct to them. "Information visualisation answers questions you didn't know you had," says Ben Shneiderman, who developed a data-discovery technique that turns money into trees. If you check out the 200 software tools described at all the products I describe here, the visualising the row a picture is worth at least 1,000 words.

For the most part, visualisation tools are cropping up as part of the analytical software packages that are used in consumer-demand companies. However, there are stand-alone products that use the technique to help you create visualisations of what otherwise might be an overwhelming set of data. One app that is calling worldwide is available from 1899 [Illegible word].

Grokker is a web search tool that interprets searches into a query with images and pages of links, shows the result as series of concentric circles on a web page. Grokker within it represent subtopics, the size of the circle represents the amount of data it contains and the colour represents the degree of similarity. Each inner circle expands as you click on it.

Visualising [Illegible word] doesn't until you click on the outermost circle, watch then appear "Groker" search engine for resume?

A new project approach works best with vague queries where you don't really know what you are looking for, says Cyril research request. For example, if you ask "India" on a map visualisation product, you may see 10,000 realistic. Grokker produced a merger-acquisitions mapping tool, which shows what is really wanted, that gathered the web displaying with a search tool. The underlying search technology, which came right out of www.northernlights.com, which offers a federated search engine. The project is an Open Directory Project, a free, cooperative effort to assemble an index of all to build a massive catalog of the Web.

Most of the visualisation tools are designed to extract from existing databases and MindManager from Chalets shows how a large jet costs you $50,000, it brings about a subtle and comfortable them into a pair of clear. The result is astonishing, like an outrage with [Illegible word] tools and as many layers as you can want. But instead of an outline's line up to **$50,000** for the basin is a linen, with a 3-day for the user. It allows the user to see a mail on anywhere you want to you build your $50,000. It can be used as a convenient to a big picture. If you want to see how the company's organization more details, items are represented or tagged with icon for significance, it is easy to get to connect data.

For the past 20 years, the best data management power on PCs has been used mainly to emulate the paper form and the work of the file clerk. Visualisation radically changes how we look at information. If will see something good in it," says Shneiderman who is a visionary. Visuals allow complicated data to be more humanistic approaching to computing. From simple charts and all visual reports much of their understanding of the world. However, if your data set is too big, one problem is frequently too much information. Visualisations can be a big help.

RESUME VERSIONS

We may fervently pray,

Everybody should submit his/her resume only on our website... and that too, directly online, in appropriate webform.

Lord has good reasons not to grant our prayer!

Hence, most likely scenario could be as shown in Annex A.

During the course of his life, a person will submit his resume at/from hundreds of... places, using different methods/devices. He will do this again & again.

And in our own interest, we will try to "capture" these resumes (of the same person) - from

  • Wherever we can (source)
  • however [illegible] (method)

This will give rise to issuance of duplicate/multiple

  • PEN
  • User ID
  • Password

to same person (again & again).

We have (I believe) tried to block (issue of multiple PEN) to same person thru some server-based software.

This has resulted into a peculiar situation.

e.g.: A person tries to submit his resume on our website directly. He sees some message like,

Sorry, we cannot accept your resume once again because it is already in our database. If you wish, you may "EDIT" it using your User ID/Password.

Now, it is that person's turn to be surprised. He just does not remember ever having submitted his resume on www.3pjobs.com and obtained a User-ID/Password/PEN !!

He has no way of knowing that, we got his resume thru

  • another partner with whom he may not remember [illegible]
  • our Placement Agency/Partner (he gave it to)
  • downloading from https://www.google.com/search?q=jobsahead.com
  • his college (10 years back?)

In a reverse case, we may receive his resume from our partner Placement [Continues on Scan_0004.jpg]

[Continuation from Scan_0003.jpg] agency and when we try to upload it on our website, we find it is already there!

So, we need a method to "bounce it" back to that Agency, saying

The resume of Mr/Ms [Illegible] which you sent us, is already in our online database and... hence... it is... returned to you.

Whereas, it may not be difficult to "automate" such message, the question is,

  • Do we / should we keep track of, from which source/method, a particular resume came into our database for the FIRST time?

and again, how did we get it/managed to get it/capture it SECOND time? THIRD/FOURTH/FIFTH time?

and depending upon the many combinations possible, what type/kind of "messages" should we send out or display on our website?

If we tried to keep track, I feel, our life - and our server-based software - may get too complicated!

Somehow, I get a feeling that we should give-up all attempts to prevent issuance of duplicate/multiple Username/Password/Pen to the same person. Let him get many.

What is likely to happen, if our server were to issue,

6 different Username/Password/PEN to the same person?

No one would, in the first place, do this (submit his resume 6 times) on his own, knowing that, he cannot possibly remember (keep track of 6 different Username/Password/PEN (issued each time he submitted)

This is most likely to happen when his resume gets uploaded on our website 6 times (from 6 different sources) WITHOUT his knowledge/volition.

Of course, each time, he would receive an email, giving him, different

Usernames/Passwords/PEN !!

This (repeat occurrence) may confuse him but we could remove the confusion by each message, saying, [Continues on Scan_0008.jpg]

Dear Jobseeker:

We have managed to collect/pick-up/acquire your resume from more than one source, where you may have posted/emailed/handed-over your resume. This (last) time, when we tried uploaded your resume on our website www.3pjobs.com, you have been allotted following,

Username : Password : PEN :

If you have already received from our webserver, another Username/Password/PEN earlier, you have following choices:

Delete the latest/current version of your resume (And the Username/Password/PEN mentioned above), by clicking here Delete

Preview your latest/current version and then decide whether you wish to retain/edit it

Edit previous versions of your resumes by entering previously allotted Username/Password/PEN or, if you wish, delete those. !! 3P consultant.

As far as CLIENT-SIDE implications... concerned, it is possible that, after conducting a resume-search, when he fills-up the Shopping Basket / he may include in the "shortlist",

3 different "versions" of same person's resume!

  • each having a different PEN (giving the client an impression that he has hit a jack-pot and found 3 excellent candidates!)

This will happen only if the client, even after viewing the "long displays" (of the 3 different PEN), fails to recognize that all 3 belong to the one-and-the-same person!!

In most cases, he would recognize the "duplicate" resumes and pick only ONE ( carrying latest date of submission/editing).

Even if Client fails, we would know when we look up other details such as "contact Info"/Names of current-previous employers etc.

So, WE eliminate these "duplicates" and inform the Client accordingly.

AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

[Continuation from Scan_0005.jpg] time) and ensure that only ONE/CURRENT/UP-TO-DATE version of your resume is retained in our online database. 3P consultant.

# On "Submit Resume" Page

Dear Jobseeker:

It is possible that we may have received your resumes, at different points of time, from different sources and all of these are part of our online resume database.

Of course, each time, your resume got uploaded on our website, you would have received, a unique set of Username/Password/PEN.

Since it is not possible for us to track/monitor who uploaded which version of your resume on our website when and how; it is up to you to delete all obsolete versions (using the Username/Passwords allotted to you each [Continues on Scan_0009.jpg]

[Continuation from Scan_0008.jpg] time) and ensure that only ONE/CURRENT/UP-TO-DATE version of your resume is retained in our online database. 3P consultant.

# On "ENQUIRY FORM" page & "RESUME-Search" pages

Dear Recruiter:

Our online resume database consists of resumes submitted by

  • a number of "Agencies/Sources"
  • at different "times"
  • using different "methods" of uploading.

As a result, it is quite possible that our database may contain 3/4 different "versions" of SAME PERSON each differing from others in minor respects.

Whereas, we constantly urge the jobseekers to eliminate such duplications (thru editing), it is impossible for us to track/monitor all such instances.

It is therefore possible that, when you conduct a resume-search and prepare a shortlist (for entry into ENQUIRY FORM / SHOPPING BASKET), some of the resumes [Continues on Scan_0007.jpg]

[Top Right: 7/7]

... shortlisted by you, while appearing to be different, may belong to the SAME person. This is understandable, since you have no access to detailed information about each resume.

Of course, on our part, we would eliminate such duplication, while sending our PROPOSAL in response to your ENQUIRY FORM.

3P consultants

Cyril,

by marking a copy of this note to my colleagues, I am asking them to debate this issue amongst themselves and Nomit will get back to you with our Consensus-Views for final action.

Microsoft bets on interactive TV in diversification bid

LISBON 4 JUNE

US SOFTWARE powerhouse Microsoft takes aim at the couch potato market this week with the high-stakes launch of its top interactive TV product on a Portuguese cable network.

The much-delayed roll-out of Microsoft's software on Thursday is part of a multibillion-dollar bet that the world's 1.5 bn television sets could be a new focus for the Washington-based firm. Underscoring its importance, Microsoft chief executive, Steve Ballmer, will be in Lisbon for the kickoff.1234

"It's a very important launch for us indeed," Mark Le Goy, Microsoft TV's marketing chief in Europe, told Reuters. "Interactive TV is core to Microsoft's strategy and direction."5678

The9 rollout over Portugal's TV Cabo system marks part of a shift by Microsoft, the world's biggest maker of personal computer software, away from the relatively slow-growing10 PC market. Besides interactive TV, Microsoft is also investing in gadgets like handheld devices, video games and mobile phones.1112

Interactive TV lets viewers do such things as plac13e bets, shop, get e-mail, play games and bank through a set-top box. Fea14tures of Microsoft's TV Advanced digital system include recording live programs, displaying live programming frame by frame and personalized viewing besides high-speed internet access. Video on demand is scheduled for the near future.

TV Cabo will be the first cable network in the world to have the Microsoft digital product available on a broadband, or high-speed digital, system. — Reuters

Subject: Technologies/Development platform used on 3pjobs

Dear Yogesh,

The following will briefly summarize the technologies/development platform used on 3pjobs. All the outputs are in HTML format on the web browser.

The webserver is WINNT4.0 with SP 6a and IIS 4.0. For the database we use Sql Server 7.0.

As for the front end most part of the site is developed using ASP scripting. These ASP pages uses underlying some COM objects on the server. The COM Object are built in Delphi 5.0.

Other than ASP we use ISAPI script for process intensive parts. These ISAPI DLLs are also developed in Delphi 6.0.

The front end validation are done using Java Script.

For server run scheduled processes we use either VB Script files or Application built in Delphi 5.0.

I hope this will gives brief idea of what is being used on the server side.

Santosh,

RESUME FORWARDING SERVICE FOR CORPORATES:

1/11

What should be the important features of this service?

FEATURES

  • Free
  • Voluntary
  • Facilities To

online

By fax

By email

over Phone

- Subscribe (Initiate)

- Unsubscribe (Suspend)

- Resubscribe (Restart)

  • From a Single Company, any number of executives can subscribe to this service. They could be from different functional backgrounds such as
    • Sales
    • Mktg
    • Mfg
    • R&D
    • Finance
    • Accounts
    • Personnel
    • Administration
    • etc.
  • To ensure "genuine-ness", registration-form (subscription-form) should require limited personal-info/data of such executives. (Of course, this is no guarantee!)

2/11

  • An ADMIN TOOL (online) will permit a subscriber to choose/select
    • What kind of resumes he would like to receive
      • eg. IT Professionals [Checkbox]
      • Non-IT " [Checkbox]
      • College Students [Checkbox]
      • Fresh Graduates [Checkbox]
      • Vocation-Designated Staff [Checkbox]
      • Retired Professionals [Checkbox]
    • He could select any number/all.
    • He can change this "configuration" anytime.

These 6 categories are too broad a classification. We may begin with this. However, if this SERVICE has to become really popular amongst Company-Executives, we will definitely need to provide means to really "Fine Tune" the requirements of a particular subscriber.

Today our "Resume Search (online)" permits "fine-tuning".

Our "Post Job Advt (online)" also permits such "fine-tuning". (

In both cases, however, a potential recruiter wants to fill a "shapely defined, (one) existing vacancy". He knows what kind of person he is looking for.

This (resume search/job advt posting) is very different from a HR manager, who has just finalized his ANNUAL MANPOWER PLAN/BUDGET, telling us, at the beginning of the year,

"In the course of the year, I would need to fill following positions:"

[Table with 4 columns: S.No., My Industry Preference , Functional Pref. , Design. Level Pref.]

1.

2.

I will also need

[Table with 4 columns: S.No., Trainees, No., Voc. Designated staff, No., When]

1.

2.

3.

In a nutshell, he enters, into the ADMIN TOOL his ANNUAL MANPOWER REQUIREMENT, and then sits back to receive MATCHING RESUMES, all throughout the year!

This is like an "OMNIBUS" CANDIDATE-ALERT

He does not have to come back and post his job-advts (for each position)

again and again!

This is (for him) like posting a JUMBO JOB-ADVT covering, all his vacancies, at the beginning of the year!

We could help him (make his job simple) by compiling all of the job-advts released by his Company on 3p / in newspapers / on websites, during last 2/3 years, and tabulate as follows:

Company Names

PAST JOB-ADVT HISTORY

Check Box

Advt. No.

Vacancy Position

Function

If such a tabulation is made a part of the ADMIN TOOL, he (HR Mgr) has to simply click on the check box  and enter the "Date when required".

For the moment, we should not introduce the "fine tuning" mentioned on p. 3/4, but simply launch the service for 6 broad categories mentioned on p. 2.

  • Although the "Resume Forwarding Service", by itself, is FREE, we have to make our MONEY from Corporates only!
  • So the resumes being forwarded (Under this Service) will NOT reveal Candidate's Identity or Contact-info.
  • These will be in the form of "long displays".
  • We will make this clear in the "Subscription-Form" itself so that there is no mis-understanding.
  • Under "Resume Forwarding Service", I feel, we should have just ONE revenue model, viz: SALE OF RESUMES.
  • This is because we expect a large volume of transactions and we cannot afford to "interview/shortlist/recommend" candidates.
  • We will have no time/energy/resources to find out / keep track of
    • Who
    • selected whom
    • from amongst How Many
    • at what Salary
    • When appointed
    • when joined
    • etc. etc.

We may fix "Resume Sale Tariff" such as:

  • College Students / Fresh Graduates --- Rs. 100/resume
  • Vocation-Designated Staff --- Rs. 200/resume
  • Retired Professionals --- Rs. 500/resume
  • IT Professionals --- Rs. 500/resume
  • Non-IT Professionals --- Rs. 500/resume

Here, we must remember following:

Jobseekers asking us/instructing us, to forward their resumes to XYZ Company obviously, are "desperate".

Such jobseekers, possibly, CANNOT be SENIOR executives. Mostly they will be,

  • Subordinate Staff (Voc. designated Staff)
  • Freshers (5 million added every year)
  • Some JUNIOR executives who are out-of-job.
  • Some, forcibly "retired" (VRS) Senior Executives.
  • 42 million unemployed graduates registered with 914 employment exchanges.
  • Temporaries
  • Part-time employed.
  • etc. etc.

  • We should make it clear to such jobseekers, that
    • we will, initially, not reveal their Identity/Contact Info. to those companies.
    • we will reveal their identity/Contact Info. only, if and when, the concerned Company "accepts" our TERMS.
    • (Jobseekers need not know what are our TERMS).
    • Any response, against their ONLINE JOB APPLICATION (other name for our Resume forwarding service), will come directly from the Concerned Corporate.
    • Thru our Resume Forwarding Service, we are offering them a FREE service, which costs us heavily. We have to recover this cost from the potential employers.
    • Thru our FREE Resume Forwarding Service, they can reach out to hundreds of Corporates who are "subscribing" to this service.
    • Their resume will get "forwarded" only if it matches the "search-criteria" prescribed by a particular company.

8/11

eg:

If an "IT Professional" asks us to forward his resume to VOLTAS, but Voltas has not selected/opted to receive such resumes,

then,

Can we flash a message on the Computer Screen, which says,

"Sorry! The Company you selected is not looking for a person with your background."

or, some such message.

And,

At what stage, should this message appear? The moment a jobseeker clicks on check box  against the name of that Company?

Or, Should we display a table such as:

Tick ↓

Name of Company ↓ City

This Company wants to receive resumes of

Voltas

IT Prof.

L&T

Godrej

Mahindra Penn

$\leftarrow$ Tick, only if you have submitted your resume under a "category" which is desired by the Company.

So, a jobseeker, KNOWS beforehand, so he does not waste his time to tick  and then see a REGRET message!

This would be quite irritating, if he gets to see only "regret messages" after "regret messages", as he keep-on ticking boxes after boxes!

This would also drastically reduce the load on our Server's Search-engine. Otherwise, it may find only ONE good "match" for every 100 requests!

What, in essence, we are attempting is

PERMISSION MARKETING

from both, the Corporates and the Jobseekers.

We are trying to "market",

  • "Jobs/Positions" to Candidates, and
  • "Resumes" to Recruiters.

And, we expect them to participate in this process, because, we are offering both parties, a

  • Simple / effortless method to reach out to each other (our USP).

Without having to make a financial Commitment! Only a small "time commitment is all that they need to make - one time!

10/11

ONE-TIME INPUTS REQUIRED.

# From Job Seekers

$\rightarrow$ All that they have to do is to Submit their resumes on our website, using appropriate webform.

These forms already exist, and no further "development-effort" is required.

In fact, quite soon, all 6 types of our Resume-Forms, will become "downloadable" from www.agentfo.com

Then, these can be filled-up OFFLINE and thereafter, can be UPLOADED directly on www.3pjobs.com.

An "offline resume-forms CD" is also developed and under distribution amongst

  • 134 colleges
  • 359 Computer Institutions
  • 20 Placement Agencies.

From these organisations, bulk resumes will arrive at 3p's office via email and will get uploaded on our website thru ADMIN TOOL.

11/11

# From Corporates

Corporate participants will have to submit SUBSCRIPTION-FORM (see Annex: A)

They may fill-in Online or send it to us by fax/email.

If they wish, they should be able to "dictate" the details to our program-manager over the telephone. In fact, I expect this to be the most popular method, since it calls for "LEAST EFFORT" on part of the subscriber. In this method, he need not have

  • a computer (or an internet connection)

He can receive resumes, as long as he is able to "access" his email box once-in-a-while.

Within the next two years, the landscape of the entertainment industry is set to undergo a revolutionary change, courtesy Microsoft Corporation16 and Reliance Infocomm. The two giants today announced an exclusive tie-up to jointly create, test and deliver next-generation Internet Protocol (IP)-based television s17ervices.18

Whil19e Microsoft is developing the software and the middleware for an IPTV solution, the nationwide high-speed infrastructure of Reliance Infocomm will be leveraged to deliver a unique host of next-generation television services.

"Microsoft's IPTV solution allows Reliance Infocomm to maximise the value of its network," said Moshe Lichtman, corporate vice-president of Microsoft's TV division in an India statement.

Microsoft's proposed IPTV solution will enable telephone and cable companies to deliver high-quality video content and services to subscribers using two-way broadband networks.

The multi-casting through a set-top box will enable Indian consumers to access health (telemedicine), education (distant learning) and other services at an "affordable price."

A Reliance Infocomm spokesman said, "This understanding highlights the strategic relationship between Reliance Infocomm and Microsoft to provide next-generation broadcast TV and video-on-demand services to Indian consumers."

What IPTV means

  • Microsoft says through the compression technology of its Windows Media Player 9 it can offer broadcast quality television over an internet connection of 1 Megabit per second.
  • A set-top box to receive and decode internet TV could cost as little as $500 in four years time, which itself is on par with some of the cheapest digital TV set-top boxes.

The IPTV solution is designed to support the services that pay-TV operators offer today, in addition to enhanced features such as instant channel changing and next-generation services like picture-in-picture functionality using multiple video streams.

Microsoft TV enables the delivery of new services such as video on demand, on-demand storefronts, interactive programme guides, managed content services, digital video recording, enhanced programming, e-mail, instant messaging and more, across a full range of set-top boxes and TV devices.

Reliance Infocom has established a pan-India, high-capacity, integrated (wireless and wired) and convergent (voice, data and video) digital network to offer services that will span the entire information-communication value chain.

KRIS Narayan wants the patented technology of his San Jose-based TeleCruz Technology to be for web-enabled television what Windows and Intel are for personal computers.

The chip and software system allows television manufacturers to throw away the separate set-top box that is currently needed to allow internet access on television because the technology is integrated within the TV.

"We are the one-stop-shop providing the complete chip and complete software," said 40-year-old Narayan, co-founder and chairman of TeleCruz. He said he plans to make future versions of the TeleCruz chipset with broadband speed and VCR-type capabilities.

The system added to a TV, said the New Delhi-born Narayan, increases the cost of a set by only $100. "Affordability is the most important point and matching the product with viewer experience is the point," he said.

He is already selling the platform in India through a strategic partnership with electronics major Videocon. The product is called Voi, for video-online communicator. It is also being exported to Africa, Middle East, and since April, to China, he said.

Earlier this year, Zenith, Panasonic and Daewoo launched the product in Las Vegas. According to reports, Panasonic will launch a TeleCruz-enabled, 27-inch TV later this year, equipped with a wireless phone connection and keyboard for $100 more than a regular set.

Narayan said three other TV manufacturers and cable service providers in India and seven more in China are soon going to deploy his platform, but he refused to give names.

In South America, TeleCruz has partners in Brazil and Argentina going into production now, and in South Korea, he is working with three manufacturers.

Narayan founded TeleCruz in '96, after stints with Fairchild Semicon-ductors, Digital Equipment, LSI Logic, VLSI, and finally Cirrus Logic.

In each of these companies, he shifted gears from being a design engineer, to program manager, and then to marketing, covering the whole gamut of skills needed to run a business.1

"I concluded I was more of a business-type than engineering-type, and also that I was fairly independent and wanted to start my own company," Narayan, said. "When you are young and restless - you want to climb up 2to top fast."

All his business acumen is serving him well at TeleCruz, the idea for which germinated while Narayan was at Cirrus.

"My premise was that the World Wide Web was emerging, and various applications were coming on the horizon that would make TV more than a broadcast entertainment medium. And when you ask yourself what more it can do, I concluded it will be displaying text and graphics, in addition to moving video." - IANS

Some thoughts on

3P / VIDEOCON Interactive TV Project.

5/6/01

  • We should try to capture the personal-data of the buyer in hellowol.com.
  • This should be done by the dealer who sell the machine (TV). He has to prepare an INVOICE - cum - DELY. CHALLAN, in any case. Homepage of hellowol should provide a section/link, where the dealer "creates/prepares" such a document and "prints" copies for buyer & himself.
  • Machine Chassis No. (like a car - chassis no.) i.e. TV no. should be also entered.

This way, Videocon will be able to keep track of who bought, which machine from where & at what price. In short complete PROFILE of each & every Customer - including repeat purchase profile i.e. Customer loyalty. This (database) will be an invaluable tool for CRM.

  • One niche market that ITV must target is PCO's.

There are over a million PCO's in India, each with a telephone connection. Someday, they will get broadband too. PCO's have revolutionised telecommunication in India over the last decade.

With our proposal, they could possibly bring internet (i.e. information) to the doorsteps of millions of Indians, who cannot afford

  • a Computer
  • a telephone connection.

If a PCO installs an ITV, he will spend Rs. 24000 (maybe we should have a special discounted price for PCO's), instead of spending Rs. 40,000 on a computer.

So, that is advantage No. ONE.

3/20

Next, we have to convince PCO owner that it makes business sense to invest in an iTV.

If we can show him that he can recover his investment within ONE year, he should be convinced.

He should recover

$$\frac{\text{Rs. } 24000}{300 \text{ working days}} = \text{Rs. } 80/\text{day}$$

(He is quite likely to be working for 350 days in a year).

His variable cost would be:

  • Rs. 6/hour of ISP charges
  • Rs. 24/hour of MTNL "

Total $\rightarrow$ Rs. 30/hour

i.e.

Rs. 6 / 10 minute slot.

4/20

And

it will take no more than 10 minutes to submit/enter a resume on 3pjobs.com.

So, he could fix following "Tariff":

1 Submit Resume --- Rs. 10/resume

2 Conduct online "Job-Search" (on Jobs database) & Use "Resume Forwarding service" of 3pjobs.com. $\bigg\}$ Rs. 2/job-advt or per "Company"

3 Open personal email box & retrieve email (print-out)

  • Could be a Job Alert / shortlist-alert / interview call letter (email) $\bigg\}$ Rs. 2/access.

4 Submit resume with a colour (passport size) photo attachment (scanner or webcamera) $\bigg\}$ Rs. 15/resume

5/20

5 General surfing $\rightarrow$ Rs. 30/hour

6 Sending email $\rightarrow$ Rs. 5/email.

The PCO owner will be expected to create an e-mail ID for each such surfer on WWW. hellowol.com

With appropriate training / backing and "advt-support", a PCO owner should be able to recover his investment within 2 months!

One could even offer PCO owners some "hire-purchase" scheme, so that his initial downpayment is no more than Rs. 3000/=.

If properly implemented, this scheme can

  • make Videocon iTV the absolute market-leader in terms of market share.
  • give Videocon the highest "brand-recall" amongst all TV brands.
  • Spread internet-culture / increase internet penetration across the Country & bring about a revolution similar to what SAM PITRODA achieved with PCOs.
  • generate for Videocon, immensely valuable market-data, to "lock-in" customers.

7/20

  • hellowol's email database, could even, someday, exceed hotmail's email database, which is currently 100 million people.

8/20

HOW TO POPULARIZE Videocon iTV IN HOMES?

  • TV's are popular because they are so easy to operate. Even a child can change channels at the press of a button on the "remote".
  • Computers are not popular because, to operate a computer, one has to learn how to use a "KEYBOARD" (even for surfing the web).

Of course, Computers are also much more expensive than a TV, and do not offer much by way of news / entertainment / streaming video images / films, without extra HW & SW features. All of these add to the complexity of a Computer.

If we want iTV to become as popular as normal TV, we should make it work with a "remote only" - rarely requiring use of KEYBOARD!!

9/20

WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO BE ABLE TO USE/OPERATE AN iTV WITH A "REMOTE" (as far as possible)

  • Select 30 TOPICS / SUBJECTS
    • eg.
      • News
      • Films
      • Sports
      • Health
      • Education
      • Jobs
      • Music
      • Politics
      • etc etc.
  • For each of these 30 topics, select 10 TOP/BEST WEBSITES, making a total of $10 \times 30 = \textbf{300 URLs}$.
  • Hardcode these into memory of iTV's SET-TOP BOX (any other chip embedded into iTV).
  • Create a "remote" which enables a person to select any of these 300 URLs by pressing Keys/buttons.

A person, first presses "Topic" button (i.e. TOPIC SELECTION) - out of 30 Topic buttons.

Then, he can click on $\text{(1)}$ To $\text{(10)}$ buttons on right-hand side, to select, the most popular websites (URL's).

KIND ATTN: Mr. Nitish Tipnis

Mr. Naveen Mandhana

11/20

If he wishes to go to any other URL, he should be able to type-in the URL in the infrared keyboard.

May be the remote could have built-in facility to "RECONFIGURE/RESET" the 10 sites (URL's) of a User's choice.

For this (resetting/reconfiguring), the Set-top box should contain URL's of 2000 most popular websites. Surfer should be able to scroll these (up/down) on iTV screen and then press a button $\text{Select }\bigcirc$ by pointing the laser-beam on that URL on the Screen. Presto! It gets added to the memory (temporary) of the remote!!

12/20

USE OF "REMOTE" TO NAVIGATE 3pjobs

  • Whether 3pjobs.com or any other website, any link should be clickable, using laser-beam from the remote. Perhaps this feature is already incorporated.

It is obvious that, to use an iTV, a surfer should not have to use 3 different devices, viz:

  • a Keyboard $\}$ for $10\%$ use.
  • a remote $\}$ These must be combined
  • a mouse $\}$ for $90\%$ of the use

As far as 3pjobs. is concerned, what would make surfer's life easy/simple? - when he is using an iTV.

Mostly, I would expect a "jobseeker" to be wanting to use 3pjobs

13/20

using an iTV from home. If he is a Personnel Manager, he would most likely log onto 3pjobs from his Office and using a regular computer (-unless he too wants to submit his resume and/or conduct a jobsearch! - Something he would not dare to do from his office).

As far as a "jobseeker" is concerned, he would want to use following features of 3pjobs. from the privacy/comfort of his home:

# 1 Submit Resume

# 2 Conduct Job-Search

# 3 Use "Resume forwarding Service" (i.e. instruct our webserver to send his resume to ABC "job-advertiser").

In future, we propose enlarging the scope of this Service, whereby a jobseeker can instruct our webserver to forward his resume to anyone of 50,000 Companies whose names he can click upon, on our website - even if such a company has advertised or not.

14/20

Of course, for such PUSHING of "unsolicited resumes, we will need advance permission of concerned Companies. Otherwise we will annoy a lot of our existing/prospective client-Corporations.

We will work-out a method to get such a permission, before uploading the name (& of course, email address) of the Company on our website.

# 4 Receive "Job-Alert" emails & check-up "job-advts" stored in his job-alert box.

# 5 Search several other databases available on our website.

Let us examine each one of these.

# 1 SUBMIT RESUME

Currently this requires use of a keyboard.

For a TV user, it is cumbersome to switch between a remote & a keyboard every few minutes! It is inconvenient/annoying!

15/20

Can an iTV user,

  • click on a "field" & then speak-out (Voice-recognition) the data?

Implications

  • sound card / microphone / V-R Software / Voice-enabled website?
  • Use of IVRS (thru ordinary telephone - which most iTV homes may have) after clicking on a "field" in the resume-form, displayed on iTV screen.

Most (or all) of dropdown list selections should be able to be carried-out with laser-beam/Click on the remote.

Perhaps, what a jobseeker "enters" thru IVRS, can appear instantly on iTV screen, so that he knows if entry is correct.

If not, he can "type-in" the corrections.

Even if these "solutions" are technically

16/20

feasible, the most important question to be asked - and answered - continuously is,

"Will this solution simplify matters or make it worse?"

Each, so-called "solution" must be "tested" on users who do not know how to use a Computer / Keyboard.

# 2 CONDUCT JOB-SEARCH

From the above chart, it is clear

17/20

that

"Posting City" $\rightarrow$ will need to be typed in (since it is a free text box)

Even, here, it is possible to have a dropdown list of some 200/300 bigger cities-towns for clicking; with a provision to type-in any other name. We are anyway considering this.

Ind/Function/Desig/Position/Category/Trade

All of these are in the form of dropdown lists. It should be possible to point the laser-beam on the desired value & then click the remote.

As far as "Short Display" & "Long Display" are concerned, either there are

Links ($\text{clickable}$)

$\text{OR}$

Check-boxes $\text{clickable.}$

18/20

# 3 RESUME FORWARDING SERVICE

(Whom do you want us to forward your resume to?)

This form contains:

User Name $\rule{5cm}{0.4pt}$

Password $\rule{5cm}{0.4pt}$

Job Advt No. $\rule{5cm}{0.4pt}$

I suppose, these are best typed in using the Keyboard.

We should, however, consider following (Simplified) solution:

First step

Jobseeker, upon entering Job-Search area/section, types in his User Name & Password.

Next step

Whichever job-advts (or Company Names) he sees (in whatever type of search-results), he simply, points the laser-beam & CLICKS. That takes care.

19/20

# 4 RECEIVE JOB-ALERT

If he logs on thru his email (online), he will be taken to his personal page where he sees all the "matching/suitable" job-advts stored.

Each job-advt should carry  check-box. If interested, he simply points & clicks to forward his resume (i.e. apply online).

The fact that he has been able to "access" his "PERSONAL PAGE", means, the server knows who he is (i.e. Username/Password/PEN) and can pick-up his "Long Display" resume from the database & forward.

This means, he need not enter Username/Password again, if he is "Returning the Job-Alert Call"!

20/20

# 5 SEARCH OTHER DATABASES

For all of these (i.e. accessing these), we plan to introduce a "REGISTRATION".

This means, to access these databases, a surfer would need to type-in his Username/Password.
